LONDON R

LONDON RD, Epsom

A high-performance, low-energy home in South London designed to Passivhaus standards, creating a sustainable living space for multi-generational family life.

The Brief

The project involves replacing an outdated single-storey annex with a new energy-efficient home alongside extensions to the existing property. Together, they will form a connected living complex for the client and their extended family, sharing a central garden space. The key objectives are:

  • Design a Passivhaus-standard home with minimal energy use.

  • Integrate the new building with its surroundings while maintaining a distinct identity.

  • Upgrade the existing house to improve energy efficiency and reduce running costs.

The Challenge

The new house needed to fit seamlessly into the varied architectural context while meeting stringent Passivhaus criteria. Balancing sustainability with aesthetics and functionality was key.

The Outcome

  • Sustainable construction – A highly insulated timber-frame structure ensures long-term energy efficiency.

  • Harmonious design – The massing and material choices respond to neighboring homes while extending design elements to the existing house.

  • Bright and open living spaces – A central stair void allows natural light to flood the home, creating a welcoming entrance hall and well-lit interiors.

Why This Project Stands Out

This project prioritises sustainability without compromising on design quality, creating a highly efficient yet comfortable home.
