ELIM TERRACE

A carefully designed development of Prefabricated Passive homes reinstating the streetscape in a key historic industrial quarter of the Conservation Area.

The Brief

A competition winning scheme for Affordable Low energy build for rent council homes replacing single story garages on periphery of St Peter’s Court Housing Estate

The Challenge

The historic streetscape of North Lowestoft has been eroded with the post war boom in residential council development seeking density and shared greenspace to the detriment of the local human scale. Our challenge was to reinstate the human scale and sense of ownership while providing affordable, low energy homes for the Local Council to rent.

The Outcome

  • Affordable Passive House – Prefabricated passive house designed for speed of delivery and performance. All homes are highly insulated and air tight with Air Source heat pumps and Solar panels with their own private gardens, providing high quality homes with minimal running costs for the local community.
  • Improved street presence – The reinstatement of the Historic street scape to compliment the Listed factory buildings opposite and providing protection to the communal green space of St Peter’s Court estate.

Contemporary Design – Links the scale of the conservation area with that of the housing estate by providing a layer of small individual units in a language closer to the adjacent tower and low rise council homes.

Why This Project Stands Out

This development will reinstate a human scale and formal street scape into the current  incoherent arrangement. More importantly it provides a model for the local authority to produce well proportioned, affordable, low-energy homes quickly with a design that gives feeling of ownership to the tenants and reinforces the sense of community.
